Nightingale Island is a small island located in the South Atlantic Ocean, part of the Lesser Antilles archipelago. The island is best known for its role in the Napoleonic Wars, when it served as a prison for the exiled French emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte. After his defeat in 1815, Napoleon was exiled to the nearby island of St. Helena, where he spent the last six years of his life. During this time, Nightingale Island served as a quarantine station for visitors to St. Helena.
