Aride

Aride is an island located in the Seychelles archipelago in the Indian Ocean. It is the northernmost of the granitic islands, and is located about 8 kilometers north of Praslin. Aride is about 1.5 square kilometers in size, making it the smallest of the granitic islands.

Aride is renowned for its abundance of wildlife. It is home to more than one million seabirds, including the world’s largest population of lesser noddies and the second-largest population of roseate terns. The island is also home to a number of reptiles, including the endangered Seychelles skink.

Aride was first discovered by the Portuguese in 1503. It was later used as a port of call by pirates and traders. In the 18th century, it was used as a base for the French East India Company. In the 19th century, it was annexed by the British and used as a coaling station.

In the late 19th century, the island was purchased by the Englishman, William Newton. He established a coconut plantation and built a small settlement on the island. The settlement was abandoned in the mid-20th century, and the island was declared a nature reserve in 1968.

Today, Aride is a popular tourist destination. It is managed by the Island Conservation Society, which works to protect the island’s unique wildlife and habitats. Visitors can explore the island by foot or take a boat tour around its coastline.
