Hoonah

Hoonah is a small city located in the southeastern corner of Alaska, in the United States. It is nestled in the Tongass National Forest and is surrounded by mountains, glaciers, and the waters of Icy Strait. Hoonah is the largest city in the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area, and is home to the Tlingit people.

Hoonah was originally a Tlingit fishing village, and was first visited by Europeans in 1786. The town was officially founded in 1881, when a cannery was established by the Alaska Packers Association. This cannery was the first cannery in Alaska and helped to spur the growth of the town. In the early 1900s, Hoonah became an important port for the Alaska Steamship Company, as well as a trading center for the area.

Today, Hoonah is home to around 900 people, and is the second-largest city in the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area. The town is known for its fishing industry, and is home to many charter boat operators, as well as a fish processing plant.
