Metlakatla

Metlakatla is an Indian reservation located on Annette Island in Southeast Alaska. It is the only remaining Indian reservation in Alaska and is home to the Tsimshian people. The Tsimshian are an Indigenous people who have lived in the area for thousands of years and are the original inhabitants of the island. The reservation was established in 1887 when the United States government granted the Tsimshian people the right to settle on the island.

Metlakatla is located on the western side of Annette Island, approximately 25 miles south of Prince Rupert, British Columbia. It is surrounded by the waters of the Pacific Ocean and has a temperate rainforest climate. The island has a total area of 1.8 square miles and is home to approximately 1,500 people.

Metlakatla has a rich history and culture. The Tsimshian people have lived in the area for thousands of years, and the island was the site of a major battle between the Tsimshian and the Haida people in the late 1700s. In 1887, the Tsimshian were granted the right to settle on the island, and the Metlakatla Indian Community was established. The community was founded by William Duncan, a missionary from England who sought to help the Tsimshian people preserve their culture and traditions.

Today, Metlakatla is an independent Indian reservation, governed by the Metlakatla Indian Community. The community is self-governing and operates its own school, health clinic, and other services. The community is also actively involved in the preservation of their culture and language, and many of their traditional activities and ceremonies are still practiced today.
