Port Clarence

Port Clarence is a small unincorporated community in Alaska, located on the north shore of the Seward Peninsula in the Bering Strait. It is located on the western side of the strait, about 10 miles east of Cape Prince of Wales. The population is estimated to be around 100 people.

Port Clarence is a relatively new settlement, having been founded in 1867 by the United States Navy as a supply station for whaling vessels. It was named after the British naval officer, Sir Clarence Edward Marryat, who had been responsible for the establishment of the settlement.

The geographical location of Port Clarence makes it an important transit point for ships traveling between the United States and Russia. It is also an important location for the fishing industry in Alaska, with many of the commercial fishing vessels in the area using the port as a base of operations.

The area around Port Clarence has a rich history. In the late 19th century, the area was a major trading post for the Inupiat people, and during World War II, it served as a major supply depot for the United States Army Air Forces. In more recent years, the area has been used by the United States Coast Guard for search and rescue operations in the Bering Sea.
