The city was incorporated in 1901, and in the years that followed, it developed a strong fishing industry, as well as a vibrant cultural community.

Nome is also known for its role in the 1925 serum run to Nome, known as the "Great Race of Mercy." During this event, a team of mushers and sled dogs delivered a life-saving serum to the city, which had been struck by a deadly diphtheria outbreak. The serum run was made famous by the book and movie, Balto.

Today, Nome remains a vibrant and diverse community, with a strong cultural identity and a rich history. The city is home to a number of museums and cultural centers, as well as a variety of outdoor activities and attractions.
