Tanaga Island

Tanaga Island is an island located in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, USA. It is located about 150 miles west of Unalaska, and is the westernmost of the islands in the Aleutian chain. The island is about 10 miles long and 5 miles wide, and has a total area of about 35 square miles. It is made up of two volcanoes, Tanaga and Gareloi, which are both active.

Tanaga Island has a rich history, and has been inhabited for thousands of years by the Unangan people. In the 1700s, the Russian Empire claimed the island as part of their territory, and established a fur trading post there. During World War II, the island was the site of a Japanese air base, and was the target of a US bombing campaign in 1943. After the war, the island was used as a military base by the US Air Force, and was also used for missile testing.

Today, Tanaga Island is home to a small population of Unangan people, and is a popular destination for birdwatchers and other nature enthusiasts. The island is also home to an important archaeological site, where the remains of ancient Unangan settlements have been found.
