Elcho Island

Elcho Island is located off the coast of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is the largest island within the Wessel group of Islands and covers an area of approximately 5,000 hectares. The island is home to the traditional owners, the Yolngu people, who have inhabited the area for over 40,000 years.

Elcho Island is situated in the Arafura Sea, approximately 100 km east of the mainland of Australia. The main settlement on the island is called Galiwin’ku and it is home to around 2,500 people. The island is surrounded by tropical rainforest and is fringed by mangroves and coral reefs.

The Yolngu people have a strong cultural connection to the land and the sea and have a rich history of traditional fishing and hunting. The island is also known for its traditional art, music and dance.

In the late 19th century, Elcho Island was visited by the Macassan people from Indonesia who traded with the Yolngu people. This trading relationship lasted until the early 20th century when the Australian government introduced a policy of assimilation for Indigenous Australians.

In the 1960s, Elcho Island became the site of a major church mission, which resulted in the establishment of a school and hospital. In the 1970s, the island was the site of a major land rights protest which resulted in the Yolngu people regaining control of their traditional lands.

Today, Elcho Island is a vibrant community that is home to the Yolngu people who continue to practice their traditional culture and customs. The island is also a popular tourist destination with visitors coming to experience the unique culture and natural beauty of the island.
