Port Douglas is a small coastal town in Far North Queensland, Australia. It is situated approximately 70 kilometres north of Cairns, and is a popular tourist destination due to its tropical climate, stunning beaches, and proximity to the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest.
Port Douglas was first settled by Europeans in 1877 and was originally named Terrigal. It was renamed Port Douglas in 1878 after the then Premier of Queensland, Sir John Douglas. The town was initially a port for the Atherton Tablelands’ gold and tin mining industry, and its population grew rapidly during this time.
The town is located on the Coral Sea and is surrounded by the stunning mountain ranges of the Daintree Rainforest. There are a number of beaches in the area, including Four Mile Beach, which is a popular spot for swimming and snorkelling. There are also a number of other attractions in the area, such as the Sunday Markets, which are held every week, and the Marina Mirage, which is a popular spot for fishing and boating.
