The street was named after Joseph-Rene Bellot, a French naval officer and explorer. Bellot was part of the British Arctic Expedition of 1852-1854, led by Sir Edward Belcher, which explored the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Bellot perished during the expedition and his body was never recovered.
