Rarotonga

Rarotonga is the largest and most populous island of the Cook Islands, located in the South Pacific Ocean about halfway between New Zealand and Hawaii. It is the political and economic center of the Cook Islands, and is home to the capital of Avarua.

Rarotonga has a tropical climate and is covered in lush rainforest and surrounded by a coral reef. The highest point on the island is the volcanic peak of Te Manga, which stands at 652 meters (2,140 feet). The island itself is roughly circular in shape, measuring about 32 kilometers (20 miles) in circumference and with a total area of 67.7 square kilometers (26.2 square miles).

Rarotonga has been inhabited since the 11th century, and was first visited by Europeans in 1773, when Captain James Cook and his crew arrived in the area. Cook named the islands the Hervey Islands, after a British Lord. In the 19th century, the islands were annexed by New Zealand and became part of the British Empire.

Today, Rarotonga is a popular tourist destination, offering visitors a variety of activities, from snorkeling and scuba diving to hiking and exploring the island’s natural beauty. The island is also home to a number of historical sites, including the Marae Taputapu, which is a traditional Polynesian temple, and the Arai te Tonga, which is a traditional meeting place for the Cook Islands people.

Rarotonga is a beautiful and vibrant island, and its culture and history make it a unique destination for travelers. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing vacation or an adventure, Rarotonga has something for everyone.
