Cabrits National Park

Cabrits National Park is a protected area located in the northern part of the Dominican Republic. The park is situated on the northern coast of the island of Hispaniola, approximately 15 kilometers east of the city of Puerto Plata. It covers an area of approximately 5,000 hectares of land and includes the Cabrits Peninsula, two small offshore islands, and the surrounding marine environment.

The park is home to a variety of ecosystems, including mangrove forests, coral reefs, and seagrass beds. The area is also home to a wide variety of wildlife, including over 200 species of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals.

The Cabrits Peninsula has a long and diverse history. It was first inhabited by the indigenous Taíno people, who named the area “Cabrits”, meaning “place of goats”. The area was later colonized by the Spanish in the 16th century, and the fortifications of Fort San Felipe were constructed in the 17th century to protect the area from foreign invasion. During the 19th century, the area was used as a base for the British Navy and was the site of several battles during the Haitian Revolution.

In the early 20th century, the area became a popular tourist destination and was declared a national park in 1978. The park is now managed by the Dominican government and is a popular destination for ecotourism, offering hiking trails, bird watching, snorkeling, and other recreational activities. In addition, the park is also a popular spot for scientific research, and has been the site of numerous studies on the ecology and biodiversity of the area.
