Basse-Terre is an island of the French overseas region of Guadeloupe, located in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean. It is the largest and most populated island of the two main islands of Guadeloupe, the other being Grande-Terre. Basse-Terre is located to the west of Grande-Terre and is separated from it by a narrow strait. It is located to the south of Marie-Galante and the north of La Désirade.
Basse-Terre is the administrative capital of the Guadeloupe region and is home to the regional prefecture and regional council. It is known for its lush green hills and its rainforest, which is part of the Guadeloupe National Park. The island is also known for its many waterfalls, including the Cascade aux Ecrevisses and the Grand Cascade.
The island has a long and rich history. It was originally inhabited by the Arawak and Carib Indians. The island was first explored by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and was later colonized by the French in 1635. During the 18th century, Basse-Terre was the administrative capital of the French West Indies. In 1759, during the Seven Years' War, the British captured the island and held it until 1815.
