Nevis is the smaller of two islands that make up the nation of St. Kitts and Nevis, located in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. It is situated just south of the larger island of St. Kitts, and the two islands are separated by a shallow 3-kilometer-wide channel known as The Narrows. The island of Nevis is roughly circular in shape and covers an area of 93 square kilometers. It is made up of a central mountain range, with the highest peak at 1,156 meters, and surrounding lowlands.
The island of Nevis has a rich and varied history. It was first settled by the Arawak people from South America around 1000 BC, and later by the Caribs in the 15th century. In 1623, the island was claimed by the British and became a British colony. It was a major sugar-producing colony in the 1700s and 1800s, and was the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Nevis was also the site of a major slave revolt in 1733.
In 1882, Nevis became part of the Federation of the Leeward Islands, a British colony in the Caribbean. In 1967, it became part of the newly formed nation of St. Kitts and Nevis, and gained independence in 1983. Nevis is now a self-governing state within the nation, with its own government, legislature, and judicial system.
Today, Nevis is a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful beaches, lush tropical rainforest, and historic sites. The island has a population of around 12,000 people and is known for its laid-back atmosphere and friendly locals. Nevis is also home to a number of historic sites, including the ruins of the old sugar plantation and the old British fort.
