Philipsburg

Philipsburg is the capital city of the Caribbean island of Saint Maarten, located in the Lesser Antilles. It lies on the Dutch side of the island, which is divided between the Netherlands and France. Philipsburg is situated on the southwestern shore of the island, with Great Bay to the north and the Great Salt Pond to the south. The city is home to a population of just over 3,000 people, and is the main commercial hub of the island.

Philipsburg was founded in 1763 by Dutch colonists, who named the settlement after John Philips, the Governor of the Dutch West India Company. The city was originally a trading port, and was the site of many battles between the Dutch and the French during the 18th century. In 1815, the Treaty of Paris was signed in Philipsburg, officially ending the Napoleonic Wars.
