Basseterre

Basseterre is the capital and largest city of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, located on the larger island of Saint Kitts in the Lesser Antilles. The city is situated in the south-east of the island, and is the administrative, commercial, and economic center of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Basseterre has a population of around 13,000 people.

Basseterre is located on the south-eastern coast of Saint Kitts, between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It is situated in the Caribbean Sea, and is part of the Leeward Islands chain. The city is located at 17°18’N, 62°44’W, and is the northernmost city in the Leeward Islands.

Basseterre has a rich history and was first settled by the French in 1627. The French named the settlement Basseterre, meaning “low land”. The settlement was later taken over by the British, who established a garrison in 1670. The city was the capital of the British colony of Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla from 1871 to 1956.

The city is also a popular tourist destination, and is home to a number of historical sites, such as the National Museum, the Fort Charles Museum, and the Government House.

Basseterre is also home to a number of important events in history. In 1782, the city was the site of the signing of the Treaty of Basseterre, which ended the American Revolutionary War. In 1834, the city was the site of the signing of the Treaty of Basseterre, which abolished slavery in the British Empire. In 1983, the city was the site of the signing of the Caribbean Free Trade Agreement.
