Taveuni is the third-largest island in Fiji, located in the northernmost part of the Fijian archipelago. It is located just east of Vanua Levu, the second-largest island in Fiji, and is separated from it by the Somosomo Strait. The island is roughly triangular in shape, with a total area of 438 square kilometers (169 square miles).
Taveuni is known as the Garden Island of Fiji due to its lush vegetation and abundant rainforest. The island is home to the Bouma National Heritage Park, a protected area of tropical rainforest that is home to a wide variety of endemic species. The island also boasts a number of beautiful beaches, with some of the best scuba diving sites in the world.
Taveuni has a population of around 8,000 people, primarily Indigenous Fijians. The main language spoken is Fijian, although English is also widely spoken. The main industries on the island are tourism, fishing, and agriculture.
Taveuni has a long history, with the first settlers arriving from the nearby islands of Vanua Levu and Kadavu around 3,000 years ago. During the 19th century, the island was a major center for sandalwood trading and whaling. In 1876, the first Christian mission was established on the island, which led to the conversion of many of the islanders to Christianity.
During World War II, the island was occupied by the Japanese, who established an airfield and a radar station on the island. In 1943, the island was the site of a major battle between the Japanese and Allied forces, which resulted in a victory for the Allies.
Today, Taveuni is a popular tourist destination, with many visitors coming to experience its beautiful beaches, lush rainforest, and unique culture. It is also an important center for conservation, with several protected areas and national parks.
