Vanua Balavu Island is located in the Lau Islands of Fiji, about 60 miles east of the main island of Viti Levu. It is the third largest of the Lau Islands and has an area of approximately 40 square miles. The island is surrounded by a number of smaller islands and islets, including the nearby island of Nukulau.
Vanua Balavu has a rugged landscape, with a ridge of mountains along the eastern coast and dense tropical rainforest in the interior. The highest point on the island is Mount Yalobi, which rises to a height of 1,100 feet. The island is home to a number of small villages, and the main town is Nukulau.
Vanua Balavu has a rich history, going back to the ancient times when the island was first settled by the Lapita people. Later, the island was part of the Tui Lau kingdom, which was founded by the Tongan chief Ma'afu in the early 1800s. During this period, the island was an important trading and cultural center, and the Tongan language was widely spoken.
In the late 19th century, the island was ceded to the British and became part of the Colony of Fiji. During World War II, the island was occupied by the Japanese, and a significant number of Fijians were killed during the occupation. After the war, the island returned to British control, and in 1970 it became part of the independent nation of Fiji.
Today, Vanua Balavu is a popular tourist destination, with a number of resorts and activities to enjoy. The island is also known for its beautiful beaches, diverse wildlife, and traditional Fijian culture.
