Amorgos

Amorgos is an island in the Cyclades archipelago in Greece. It is located southeast of Naxos and northeast of Astypalea, and is the easternmost island of the group. The island has an area of 121 square kilometers, making it the third largest in the Cyclades after Naxos and Andros. The highest point is Mount Profitis Ilias, which stands at 821 meters above sea level.

Amorgos has a long and fascinating history that dates back to the Neolithic period. In the 6th century BC, the island was colonized by the Dorians, who established the city of Minoa. The island later became part of the Athenian Empire, and during the Peloponnesian War it was a base for the Spartan fleet. In the 4th century BC, the island was conquered by Alexander the Great and became part of the Macedonian Empire.

Throughout the centuries, Amorgos has been occupied by various powers, including the Romans, the Byzantines, and the Venetians. During the Ottoman period, the island was a refuge for pirates. In 1821, it was liberated by the Greek Revolution, and in 1912 it was annexed to Greece.

Today, Amorgos is a popular tourist destination, known for its stunning natural beauty. The island is home to numerous beaches, such as Agia Anna and Agios Pavlos, and its rugged coastline is dotted with sea caves and secluded coves. The island is also home to a number of historical sites, such as the ancient city of Minoa and the 11th century Monastery of Hozoviotissa.
