Brattahlid

Brattahlid is an archaeological site located in the Qassiarsuk area of South Greenland. It is the site of the former Norse settlement of Brattahlid, founded by Erik the Red in 985 AD. This site is of great historical importance as it was the first permanent European settlement in the New World, and the first known settlement in Greenland.

Brattahlid is located on the shores of Tunulliarfik Fjord, on the southern tip of the island of Greenland. It is about 13 kilometres (8 miles) from the modern-day town of Qassiarsuk. The area is surrounded by mountains, and the fjord provides access to the sea. The settlement was located on a flat area of land, which was ideal for farming and grazing animals.

Brattahlid was an important trading post and cultural centre for the Norse settlers in Greenland. It was also the seat of the Norse chieftain, Erik the Red, and the site of the first Christian church in Greenland, which was built in 1000 AD.

The settlement of Brattahlid was abandoned in the 15th century, and the site was rediscovered in the 19th century by Danish archaeologists. Since then, many archaeological excavations have been conducted at the site, revealing a wealth of information about the Norse culture and way of life.

Today, Brattahlid is an important archaeological site, and is a popular tourist destination. Visitors can explore the ruins of the settlement, and visit the nearby museum, which displays artifacts from the site. It is also possible to take a boat tour of the fjord, and to explore the surrounding area.

The site of Brattahlid is a reminder of the important role that the Norse settlers played in the history of Greenland, and of their lasting legacy in the New World.
