Hvalsey is a settlement located in the Qaqortoq municipality in southern Greenland. It is situated on the eastern shore of the Hvalsey Fjord, a narrow inlet of the Tunulliarfik Fjord, and is one of the best preserved Norse ruins in Greenland. Hvalsey was a major trading post during the Viking Age and was one of the last settlements in Greenland to be abandoned by the Norse settlers in the 15th century.

Hvalsey is located at the tip of the Hvalsey Fjord, which is situated in the southern region of Greenland. The area is known for its rugged terrain and spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and fjords. The settlement is surrounded by lush green hills, and the nearby Tunulliarfik Fjord provides an excellent view of the glaciers and icebergs in the area.

The settlement of Hvalsey was first established by the Norse settlers in the 11th century. During this time, the settlement was a major trading post for the Norse and was a hub for trade between Greenland and Europe. In 1408, the last recorded wedding in Greenland was held at the Hvalsey Church, which is now a ruin. This event is seen as a symbol of the end of the Norse colonization of Greenland.

In the years that followed, the settlement of Hvalsey was abandoned and the ruins were left to the elements. However, in the 19th century, the ruins were rediscovered and archaeological excavations began to uncover the remains of the settlement. Today, the ruins of Hvalsey are a popular tourist destination and are visited by thousands of people each year.

Hvalsey in Greenland has a cold and wet climate with short, cool summers and long, cold winters. In the summer, temperatures average around 10°C, with the warmest months being June and July. The winter months are much colder, with temperatures dropping to around -10°C. The autumn and spring months are milder and wetter, with frequent snowfall. Although the climate is cold, the Gulf Stream helps to keep temperatures relatively mild.
