In the 19th century, Wajag Island was a major center of the sandalwood trade. The island was also an important stop for whalers, who stopped at the island on their way to and from the nearby whaling grounds.
During World War II, the island was occupied by the Japanese and was used as a base of operations. After the war, the island became a part of the newly independent Republic of Indonesia.
Today, Wajag Island is a popular tourist destination. The island is known for its beautiful beaches, lush tropical forests, and unique wildlife. There are several resorts on the island, as well as several dive sites, where visitors can explore the coral reefs and observe the diverse marine life.
