Liepaja

Liepaja is the third largest city in Latvia, located in the western part of the country on the Baltic Sea. It is the largest city of the Kurzeme region and the administrative centre of Liepaja municipality. The city is situated on a shallow bay of the Baltic Sea, about 25km from the Lithuanian border.

The city was founded in 1253 by the Livonian Order of the Teutonic Knights and was known as Libau until the 1920s. Liepaja is an important port city and fishing centre, and is home to many industries, including shipbuilding, engineering, and food processing.

Liepaja is a popular tourist destination, known for its sandy beaches, historic buildings, and vibrant nightlife. The city is home to several museums, including the Liepaja Museum, which houses a collection of artifacts from the city's history, and the Liepaja History and Art Museum, which displays works of art from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Liepaja has a rich history, and was an important centre of commerce during the Hanseatic League. During World War II, the city was occupied by the Germans and then by the Soviet Union. After the war, Liepaja was the site of a major Soviet naval base, and in the late 1980s, it was the focus of the Latvian independence movement.

Today, Liepaja is an important cultural and economic centre in Latvia, and is home to the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, one of the oldest orchestras in the Baltics. It is also the site of several important annual events, such as the Liepaja International Music Festival and the Liepaja Half Marathon.
