Riga

Riga is the capital and largest city of Latvia, located on the Baltic Sea coast in the north of the country. It is the largest city in the Baltic region and the second largest city in the European Union after Berlin. It has a population of around 641,000 people, making it the largest city in the Baltic states.

Riga is located on the southern coast of the Gulf of Riga, at the mouth of the Daugava River. It is bordered by Estonia to the north, Lithuania to the south, and Belarus to the east. The city is divided into four main districts: the Old Town, the Central District, the Northern District, and the Southern District.

Riga has been an important port city since the Middle Ages, and has been ruled by many different powers throughout its history. In 1201, it was founded by German traders as a trading post, and in 1282 it was annexed by the Teutonic Knights. In 1581, it was taken by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and in 1621 it became part of the Swedish Empire. In 1710, it was taken by Peter the Great of Russia, and it remained a part of the Russian Empire until 1918.

Riga was occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II, and was later annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940. It regained its independence in 1991, and is now a part of the European Union.

Riga is an important cultural center in the Baltic region, and is home to many museums, galleries, and other cultural attractions. It is also home to the University of Latvia and the Latvian Academy of Sciences.
