Windau is a city in the western part of Latvia, located in the historic region of Courland. It is located on the banks of the Windau River, a tributary of the Daugava River. The city is approximately 25 miles away from the capital city of Riga.

Windau was first mentioned in written records in 1253, and was granted city rights in 1376. It was an important trading center and port in the 16th century, and was a member of the Hanseatic League. The city was occupied by the Swedes during the Great Northern War, and was later annexed by Russia in 1795.

During the 19th century, Windau became an important industrial center, with factories producing textiles, paper, and leather goods.
