Palawan is an island province located in the southwestern region of the Philippines. It is bordered by the South China Sea to the west, the Sulu Sea to the northeast, and the Celebes Sea to the southeast. It is the fifth largest island in the Philippines and is composed of more than 1,700 islands and islets. The capital of Palawan is Puerto Princesa City, located on the main island of Palawan.

In 1521, Ferdinand Magellan became the first European to visit Palawan, which was then part of the Sultanate of Sulu. In the 18th century, the Spanish colonized the island and established a garrison in Puerto Princesa. The Spanish also introduced Christianity to the island, which remains the dominant religion today.
In the 19th century, Palawan became part of the Spanish East Indies, and in 1898, the island was ceded to the United States as part of the Treaty of Paris. In 1946, Palawan was incorporated into the newly independent Republic of the Philippines.
Today, Palawan is a popular tourist destination, known for its natural beauty and diverse wildlife. It is also home to a vibrant culture, with a mix of indigenous, Spanish, and American influences.
