Third

Third is a municipality in northern Portugal, located in the district of Viana do Castelo. It is located in the historical province of Minho, and is part of the Greater Metropolitan Area of Porto. The population of Third in 2011 was 11,845, in an area of 72.81 km².

Third is situated in the middle of the Minho region, and is bordered by the municipalities of Ponte de Lima, Ponte da Barca, Arcos de Valdevez, and Valença. The municipality is located on the banks of the Cávado River, and is known for its picturesque landscapes, with vineyards, apple orchards, and rolling hills. The highest point in the municipality is the Serra do Soajo, at 1,000 meters above sea level.

Third has a long and rich history, having been inhabited since pre-Roman times. The area was occupied by the Romans in the 2nd century BC, and later by the Suebi, Visigoths, and Moors. In 1188, Third was taken by forces of Afonso I, the first king of Portugal, and was later granted a charter in 1258.

In the 15th century, Third was the site of a battle between Portuguese and Castilian forces, resulting in a victory for the Portuguese. During the 19th century, Third was the center of an important industrialization movement, with factories and mills producing textiles, paper, and other products.
