Assumption Island is a small island located in the Seychelles, an archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean. It is part of the Amirante Islands, a group of islands located in the western part of the Seychelles. Assumption Island is located approximately 400 km southwest of the Seychelles' main island of Mahé. The island is roughly triangular in shape, with an area of 1.3 km2 and a coastline of 4.5 km.

Assumption Island has a rich history. It was first discovered by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in 1502, who named it Ilha da Assumpta. In 1756, the French took possession of the island and established a settlement, which was abandoned in 1778. In 1812, the British took control of the island and established a garrison, which was later abandoned in 1817.

In 1892, the Seychelles became a British colony and Assumption Island was incorporated into the colony. During World War II, the island was used as a military base by the British and was the site of several naval battles between the British and the Japanese. In 1976, the Seychelles gained independence and Assumption Island became part of the newly independent nation.

Today, Assumption Island is a nature reserve and is home to a variety of birds, including the white-tailed tropicbird, red-footed booby, and Sooty Tern.
