Townsville is a city located in the north-eastern corner of the Australian state of Queensland. It is situated on the north-eastern coast of the state, about halfway between Brisbane and Cairns. The city is the largest urban centre in Northern Australia and the largest city in the state outside of the state capital, Brisbane.

The city has a population of around 190,000 people, making it the 24th largest city in Australia. Townsville is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area and is the largest city in the region. It is also a major industrial and commercial centre, with a large port and a thriving tourism industry.

The city is located on the eastern side of the Great Dividing Range, with the city centre located on the Ross River. The city is surrounded by a number of mountain ranges, including the Townsville Range to the north and the Paluma Range to the south.

Townsville has a tropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. The city experiences a wet season from November to April, with most of the rain falling in January and February.

The city has a rich history, having been founded in 1864 as a port for the pastoral industry. During World War II, the city was a major military base, with the Royal Australian Air Force and United States Army Air Force using the port and airbase facilities. The city was also a major base for the Australian Navy during the war.

Today, Townsville is a thriving regional centre, with a strong economy based on tourism, agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. The city is home to a number of universities, museums, and cultural venues, as well as a number of popular beaches.
