Roscoff

Roscoff is a commune in the Finistère department of Brittany in north-western France. It is located on the western tip of the Brittany peninsula, on the northern shore of the Iroise Sea, approximately 30 kilometres (19 miles) east of Brest.

Roscoff is a popular tourist destination due to its mild climate and beautiful scenery. The area is renowned for its sandy beaches, rugged coastline, and picturesque fishing villages. The town itself is home to a variety of attractions, including the Church of Notre-Dame de Croaz-Batz, the Jardin Exotique de Roscoff, the Musée de la Mer, and the Musée des Phares et Balises.

The commune has a long history, with evidence of human habitation dating back to the Bronze Age. It was once a major port for the export of Breton granite, and later served as a major port for the fishing industry. In the 19th century, Roscoff was a major centre for the cultivation of seaweed, which was used to fertilise the soil.

In the 20th century, Roscoff developed into a popular holiday destination for French and foreign tourists alike. It is now an important ferry port, with regular services to the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Spain.

Roscoff is also home to the world-renowned Roscoff Biological Station, which was founded in the late 19th century by the French biologist Jacques Monod. The station is dedicated to the study of marine biology, and is a major centre for research into the ecology and evolution of marine organisms.
