Hilo

Hilo is a city located on the eastern side of the Big Island of Hawaii in the United States. It is the county seat of Hawaii County and the largest city in the county. Hilo is situated in a lush rainforest at the base of two of the world’s most active volcanoes, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. With an estimated population of 45,000, Hilo is the second-most populous city in the state of Hawaii.

Hilo is located on the east side of the Big Island, about 200 miles southeast of Honolulu. The city is situated on the banks of the Wailuku River, which flows into Hilo Bay, a sheltered harbor. The bay is protected by two breakwaters, Coconut Island and Moku Ola, and is a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling, and fishing.

Hilo has a long and rich history. The city was once a major port of call for whalers and traders in the 19th century, and served as a center of commerce for the island. In the early 1900s, Hilo became the site of the first sugar plantation in Hawaii. The city was also the site of the devastating 1946 tsunami, which killed more than 160 people and destroyed much of the city’s infrastructure.

Today, Hilo is a vibrant city with a thriving economy. It is home to the University of Hawaii at Hilo, as well as numerous cultural and historical attractions, including the Lyman Museum and Mission House, the Imiloa Astronomy Center, and the Pacific Tsunami Museum.
