Easter Island

Easter Island is a small Chilean island located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean approximately 2,300 miles off the coast of Chile. The island is triangular in shape, measuring approximately 11 miles long and 3.5 miles wide. It is most famous for its 887 monumental statues, called moai, which were carved from stone and erected by the native Rapa Nui people between 1250 and 1500 CE.

The Rapa Nui people had a rich culture and language and a complex religion, which revolved around ancestor worship. The moai were believed to represent the spirits of deceased ancestors and were erected to protect and watch over the island. The Rapa Nui people also had a complex agricultural system, utilizing the island’s limited resources to grow crops such as sweet potatoes, bananas, and taro.

In 1722, Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen became the first European to visit Easter Island. He named the island “Paasch-Eyland” or Easter Island, due to his arrival on Easter Sunday. In the following centuries, the island was colonized by the Spanish, French, and British. In 1888, Chile annexed the island, and it remains under Chile’s control today.

Easter Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to the Rapa Nui National Park, which protects the island’s unique ecology and archaeological sites. The island is a popular tourist destination, and visitors can explore the moai, hike the island’s volcanic landscape, and learn about the culture and history of the Rapa Nui people.
