Shingu is a small city located in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. It is situated on the Kii Peninsula in the south of the country, facing the Pacific Ocean. The city has a population of approximately 30,000 people and is known for its beautiful scenery and rich cultural heritage.
Shingu has a long and storied history, having been inhabited since at least the Jomon period (14,000-300 BCE). During the Edo period (1603-1868), it served as the administrative center of the Kishu domain. In the Meiji period (1868-1912), Shingu was the birthplace of the modern Japanese navy, and many of the ships used in the Russo-Japanese War were built in the city.
Shingu is home to several important cultural sites, including the Kumano Nachi Taisha shrine, one of the three grand shrines of the Kumano faith. The shrine is located near the Nachi Waterfall, one of the tallest in the country, and is the site of several important festivals throughout the year.
The city is also known for its traditional crafts, such as Kishu lacquerware and Kishu textile weaving. The city's traditional architecture is also of note, with many old buildings still standing in the city center.
Shingu is an important stop on the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The pilgrimage route has been used since the 11th century and is still used by many pilgrims today.
