Hubbard Glacier

Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America and is located in the southeastern part of Alaska, in the United States. It is part of the Yakutat Bay and is around 76 miles long, making it the longest glacier in the US. It is also one of the most active glaciers in the world, advancing at a rate of approximately 7 feet per day.

The glacier is named after Gardiner Hubbard, the first president of the National Geographic Society. It is part of the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, which is the largest national park in the US and the largest UNESCO World Heritage Site in North America.

The Hubbard Glacier is a popular tourist attraction, with people visiting to take in the stunning views of the glacier and the surrounding landscape. It is also a popular spot for kayaking, fishing, and camping.

The Hubbard Glacier has been a part of Alaska’s history for centuries. In 1886, it was the site of a massive earthquake that caused a tsunami in the nearby town of Yakutat. In 2002, the glacier blocked off Russell Fjord, creating a lake that flooded the nearby town of Yakutat. This event, known as the “Russell Lake Flood”, caused extensive damage to the town and surrounding areas.

The Hubbard Glacier is an important part of Alaska’s natural and cultural history. It is a beautiful and awe-inspiring sight that draws visitors from all over the world.
