Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands located in the Andaman Sea off the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The main island, Pulau Langkawi, is the largest and most developed of the islands, and is a popular tourist destination for its stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and rich cultural heritage.

Geographically, Langkawi lies about 30 km off the coast of Kedah, the northernmost state of Peninsular Malaysia. The main island is about 95 km long and 50 km wide, with a total area of 478 km2. The highest point on the island is Gunung Raya, which stands at 881 meters. The other islands in the archipelago are mostly uninhabited, with only a few small settlements.

Langkawi has a long and fascinating history. It is believed to have been inhabited since the Neolithic era, and archaeological evidence suggests that the area was an important trading port during the Iron Age. During the 16th century, Langkawi was an important port for the Sultanate of Kedah, and was used as a base for trading with China. In the 18th century, the island was colonized by the British, and in the 19th century, it became part of the Straits Settlements, a British colony.

In 1987, Langkawi was declared a duty-free island, and since then it has become a popular tourist destination. The island is home to a number of attractions, including the Langkawi Cable Car, which offers stunning views of the island from the top of Gunung Raya, and the Langkawi Wildlife Park, which is home to a variety of exotic animals.
